Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and all who participate will receive something special!
BERRY LAKE GRANT SPONSORED BY THE TOWN OF UNDERHILL
On June 16th, the Underhill Town Board tonight agreed with the majority of Berry Lake Stakeholder's Committee members (and BLPO members) to include an introductory paragraph to the recommendations being submitted to the DNR. It is understood that this is a request, and that this paragraph does not hold any legal authority. They changed the wording to say: "It is recommended that any public or private studies/grants of Berry Lake be brought before the stakeholders prior to execution of the study. This is requested to keep stakeholders and committee represented groups informed. A process is needed to provide adequate communication and planning between the study group and stakeholders before any studies are granted and undertaken. These studies can provide valuable information on a natural resource, but we must respect the rights and needs of the stakeholders in the process. We request that future studies be brought before the stakeholders before proceeding".
WE NEED YOU - CLEAN BOATS CLEAN WATERS MONITORING
Volunteers will be needed again this year to monitor our boat landing during peak times throughout the summer. It would be wonderful to have CBCW monitors at the landing during early morning and early evening hours when boats are most likely to be coming and going. Please email berrylakewi@gmail.com with the dates/times you can help. Thank you.

LEGEND LAKE FAIRE
The Legend Lake Faire was held on Saturday, June 6th, and Berry Lake was represented in the new AIS Collaborative booth. This new Invasive Species Collaborative was coordianted by the UWEX in Keshena, and the following area groups are now a part of this new Invasive Species Collaborative: Berry Lake, La Motte, Moshawquit, Menominee County Government, the UWEX, Menominee Indian Tribe, Legend Lake POA, and Legend Lake Protection & Rehabilitation District.
Weather was terrible and attendance was poor, but there were some interesting things to learn and see for anyone who attended. I'm providing a few links below if you'd like to find out more information on your own.
- The Menominee Fish & Wildlife Svc. had netted some sturgeons near the dam at Legend Lake earlier this morning, and had them in a pool for all to see. I never knew there were sturgeons in Legend Lake and it was really interesting to see them up close and personal for the first time!
- Bob Korth from the UWEX gave a presentation on invasive species.
- Jeremy Johnson from Menominee County had a display on the set up of underground septic tanks.
- The UWEX and DNR provided a lot of literature on many subjects including: invasive plants of the future, rain gardens (gardens that soak of rain water from roofs/driveways to prevent runoff into waterways), sensible shoreland lighting, and of course invasive species.
- LoonWatch had a display on the importance of switching from lead-based sinkers/lures to safer alternatives.
WISCONSIN'S NEW PIER/DOCK REGULATIONS
In the summer of 2008, new legislation concerning the placement of piers/docks on Wisconsin waterways went into effect. Piers can be a maximum of 6' wide with an 8' x 8' loading platform/deck at the waterward end. For more information from the DNR's website CLICK HERE.
LOW LAKE LEVELS IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN
In the spring newsletter of the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership (which is published by the UWEX), there is an interesting article on low water levels. In summary, this article suggests that lake levels in northern Wisconsin are primarily driven by changes in precipitation and evaporation; and it also states that water temperatures are rising which causes increased evaporation due to global warming.
