BERRY LAKE WISCONSIN

BERRY LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC.
PO BOX 2   CECIL, WI  54111
[email protected]
Berry Lake has voted on and approved the creation of a BERRY LAKE COMMUNITY DISTRICT.
This government organization will be a more efficient way for us to equally spread out the costs
for future aquatic invasive species control, et. al.
The BLPOA will continue to exist as is for the time being, as we move through this transition.

FYI from the AIS Committee - July 2025
During and post the 4th of July weekend, many might have noticed the absence of floating or near surface Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM).  A few North Shore owners report potential EWM fragments on their beach.

AIS Committee members: Carol A. reported that she paddled around the West Basin and saw zero signs of EWM. She did pick up some strays but was very excited to discover that they were native milfoil. "You can really tell the minute you get them out of the water. The native variety is more rigid instead of wimpy or limp like the invasive plant". Jim D. reported he saw little evidence of EWM from the pontoon. Jennifer McD. notes zero EWM on their south shore after the holiday weekend.

Since there seems to be little to no evidence of EWM coming to shore, any raking or cleanup of native plants cannot be added to your volunteer grant sheet. This is a great position to be in because it means the herbicide treatment has been a success, so far. The invasive milfoil seems to be knocked down after this spring treatment. We will still monitor for long term results. Please report any areas of EWM concern to the BLCD and remember, pictures are always helpful.

If we are not as a lake community collecting as many volunteer hours by raking the beach or pulling out floaters when on a watercraft, it would be beneficial for anyone who has the ability to provide at least 1 hour of their time at the boat landing to meet our minimum of 50-hour Grant expectations for this season. Here is the sign up link. https://volunteersignup.org/CD7RX

There is booming evidence that EWM herbicide treatment targets milfoil and leaves native vegetation alone. We have a lot of healthy native weeds providing oxygen, food and shelter. You may notice many fragments of native plants are showing up on your shore after a busy boating weekend.

Also, please remember Berry lake is a runoff and seepage lake. What you do on shore or near the shore matters. If you are using fertilizers on grass or plantings there is great potential of impact on the plants in the lake. Fertilizer runoff can cause algae blooms, increased plant growth in the water and potential negative effects on swimming/recreation.

Thank you for caring about Berry Lake.  A reminder, the Berry Lake Community  District (BLCD) is now the agency responsible for Berry lake water management. To stay informed regarding water issues, please check out their website and sign up for email notifications. https://berrylakecommunitydistrict.org/

Currently the BLPOA is in transition and is currently responsible for lake community events and keeping owners connected via the website, email and Facebook. This will be posted on the BLPOA website and possibly Facebook, sent by email and posted on the BLCD website.

SHARING THIS PRESENTATION
which was given to another lake association on things that you can do to be a better lake steward:
  • minimize pesticide use
  • reduce nighttime light pollution
  • replace some lawn with native plants
